Day 161

Today was predicted to be a rainy afternoon, so we decided to take advantage of the rain free morning and took a walk around St. Petersburg. Along the waterfront are several parks with benches and landscaping. We also walked our to The Pier. It was once a hoppin' and happin' place with shops and eateries, but now is closed and showing its age. Locals say the city is trying to revive this interesting building, but time will tell if they succeed.

Another interesting architectural structure was the Open Air Post Office. It has been in continuous operation since 1916. The building is Mediterranean Revival style and modeled after a 15th century hospital in Florence, Italy. The total cost of construction was $107,500. There are actual post office boxes under the roof line.

After eating gyros at a Greek restaurant, Acropolis Greek Taverna, we walked back to the boat to avoid the down pour. As predicted the rain began in the early afternoon. Looking our the back slider door window, Dan thought he saw a machine gun on the front of a boat. Sure enough, a United States Coast Guard patrol boat was fueling up at the fuel dock. We would not want to upset this captain and crew. We are glad they are out there to help keep us safe.

We were lucky enough to be able to watch the first College Football National Playoff game in the evening. There was a small lounge area at the marina that had a TV with ESPN. We were very interested in watching this game since The Ohio State University was one of the teams playing. The opposing team also was OSU (Oregon State Univerisity). Angie called in the UCKS bowl - the Bucks vs. the Ducks. Our evening ended on a happy note with a Buckeye win.
