HAMPTON, VA TO JACKSON CREEK AT DELTAVILLE, VA

Monday, May 18th to Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Day 287-288
Miles Traveled on Tuesday: 46
Total Miles Traveled: 3869

Monday we rented a car with "Mighty Fine" and "Horizon Chaser" in order to do laundry and groceries.  The laundromat we went to was one of the cleanest we have ever used.  While Angie did the laundry, Dan went to WalMart for groceries and other household items.  After getting those jobs done we moved on to cleaning.  Dan washed all the salt spray off of the boat while Angie cleaned the flybridge cushions.  After washing the boat, Dan noticed that the air conditioner water discharge seemed to be weaker than usual.  Suspicious that the strainer for the AC pump was clogged, we moved the couch out of the way to gain access to that side of the bilge.  Sure enough, the strainer was full of sea grass that was floating in the harbor of the marina.  After cleaning the strainer, the flow was better, but still not up to par.  We then back flushed the discharge line and the intake line.  The flow improved, but was still just a little weaker than usual.  The possibility of a barnacle or something else obstructing the intake was a concern.  This will have to be checked at a later date.  For now, the pump appeared to be getting adequate flow and the AC was cooling fine.  By then, it was dinner time, and, we all went out to eat at Marker 20.

Tuesday we, along with "Mighty Fine" and "Horizone Chaser", left Hampton, VA and the James River and entered Chesapeake Bay.  The water was very calm - a second time that we have been blessed with extremely calm waters on waters that are usually full of waves.

We passed by Wolf Trap Lighthouse located a few miles north of the York River.  It is an interesting structure with an octagonal shaped home.  It has been privately owned in the past.  One source found on the internet stated that it was up for sale again in 2013.

After passing Wolf Trap Lighthouse, the winds began to increase as did the waves.  What was once flat water became 2-4 foot waves.  We had spray coming over the bow on a pretty regular basis.

As we neared the Piankatank River entrance, we began to get some protection from a land point, and, the waves began to lessen.  Shortly after entering the Piankatank River, we veered north up Jackson Creek near Deltaville, VA.  There was a very nice anchorage in this creek.  We got our anchor secured just in time for lunch.

After lunch, Dan from "Horizon Chaser" donned his wet suit and scuba gear and dove under all three boats checking props and intakes.  He found a large amount of sea grass plugging our intake for the air conditioner.  After its removal, the water discharge flow was much improved and stronger than it has been in a long time.  YEAH!  Thank you "Diver Dan".

Once all the boats had been thoroughly inspected, we all lowered our dinghys and took a trip to shore.  Craig knew someone nearby with a dock for our dinghys.  We walked quite a distance to a West Marine store (probably about 1.5 miles).  It was a nice walk, except for the heat and humidity.  Once we were back aboard, we grilled some pork chops for dinner and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.
