Day 402
Miles Traveled: 32
Total Miles Traveled: 6192

Dan turned in the rental car while Angie made preparations for getting underway.  Shortly after Dan returned to the marina, we casted off and headed across the lower end of Lake Michigan.

The forecast was for fair winds and calm seas.  The weather Gods must have thought that was funny, because about two hours into our four hour trip, the winds increased and so did the waves.  What started out as less than one foot waves progressed to two foot seas.  Fortunately, we were able to increase speed to arrive sooner than planned, and, as we neared our destination, the shoreline was giving us some protection from these wind and waves.  Overall, it was not a terrible cruise across the lake, but, not as calm as we had anticipated.
Despite all the rocking and rolling, Angie was able to snap a quick photo of Chicago in the distance.  It was obscured by haze, but, if you look closely, the skyscrapers can be seen.
look closely - do you see Chicago?

We chose to stay at Hammond Marina in Hammond, IN as opposed to going to downtown Chicago.  The dockage is a lot cheaper and there is a lot less boat traffic to deal with.  We decided not to take "Seahorse" through downtown Chicago and avoid having to dodge boats and deal with bridges.  This marina was very close to the entry into the river system south of Chicago.

The marina is located on the same grounds as the Horseshoe Casino.  For dinner, we enjoyed the casino's buffet. This was one of the better buffets we have experienced.  There was a great selection of various cuisines and the food was delicious.

From our seats at the buffet, we had a nice view of the start of the sunset over the marina with downtown Chicago, IL in the distance.
