Day 393
Miles Traveled: 16
Total Miles Traveled: 6054

As we were leaving Muskegon Harbor and heading back out into Lake Michigan, we encountered the large Lake Express Ferry returning to the harbor from the lake.  We moved as far over in the channel as we could to have a safe pass.

Again, "Always Home" was following behind.  We had sunny skies and calm seas (for Lake Michigan).  The haze has continued, so again, no pictures of our cruising day.  We arrived at Grand Haven Municipal Marina just before lunch.  After eating, we hopped on the trolley for a tour of Grand Haven.  The price was right at $1.50 for Angie and $0.75 for Dan.  It was a nice way to get a glimpse of the city of Grand Haven complete with narration by the trolley driver.  Once the trolley ride was complete, we took the long walk (about 2 miles) to the lighthouse we passed on the entrance to Grand Haven channel.

Along the boardwalk that extends to the lighthouse were two interesting attractions.  One was an art sculpture of three fish found in Lake Michigan.  The second was a memorial to the Coast Guard Cutter "Escanaba" which was destroyed by and enemy submarine during World War II.  Its original wooden mast serves as the memorial.

On our walk back to the boat, we ran into Ralph & Janet from "Gud Nuff" and Jesse & Linda from "Bama Dream".  We visited with them for awhile and caught up on each other's travels.  They also were staying at the Municipal Marina in a different location.

Grand Haven is the only official "Coast Guard City, USA" in the nation.  This designation was established on November 13th, 1998 by an act of congress.  The Coast Guard first arrived at Grand Haven in 1924 and the town embraced its presence.  They even have a Coast Guard Festival every year.

Grand Haven is also known for its spectacular musical fountain.  At the time it was built in 1962, it was the largest musical fountain in the world.  Although it no longer holds this title, it still is an amazing display of lights and sound.  To read more about the Grand Haven Musical Fountain go to: http://ghfountain.com/about/
