Day 305-312
Miles Traveled on Friday the 12th: 44
Total Miles Traveled: 4450
Friday, June 5th, we departed Catskill, NY with our rental car for a week long family visit - parents, siblings, son, grandchildren, niece and nephew. We had a great time catching up with everyone. We returned to Catskill on Wednesday evening. Thursday was spent preparing for the upcoming departure. We were able to relax Thursday evening and have a bonfire with Dan & Jacque on "Horizon Chaser" who also went to visit family and not planning to leave until the next day. The harbormaster and his wife also joined us.

Friday, June 12th, we continued our journey up the Hudson River. We passed by another nice lighthouse.

An interesting siting was a tow boat PULLING a barge instead of pushing it, like we are accustomed to seeing on the Ohio River.

We passed by the city of Albany, NY. Not as impressive as New York City, but still had some beautiful buildings.

Shortly after passing by Albany, NY we arrived at the Troy Lock. This is a federal lock and not a New York State lock, unlike the locks for the Erie and Champlain Canals. At this lock, there are no lines or floating bollards. You lock up and down by looping your line around a pipe recessed in the lock wall. As the boat goes up or down, the line slides along the metal pipe. We handled this new type of locking without difficulty. We could not say the same for the lock itself. As the gates were opening for our exit, we noticed that only one of the gates was moving. Fortunately, there was enough room for us to exit with just one door open. As we passed by, the lock master advised us that the hydraulic seal had broken on the unopened lock door.

We ended our day at a famous junction on the Hudson River at Waterford, NY. This is the location were the Erie Canal starts or one proceeds on to the Champlain Canal. There is even a boat traffic sign to make sure you go the right direction.

We found a spot on the Waterford free wall and walked to the Visitor's Center. We were greeted by the Waterford Erie Canal Mule.

That evening we went out to dinner and said our good-byes to Dan & Jacque on "Horizon Chaser". Tomorrow they are headed through the Erie Canal and we are taking the Lake Champlain Canal Route. We made it back to "Seahorse" just before a big storm with lots of wind and rain arrived.
